It has been suggested as a new convention to name binary distributions something like package-version-bin-binversion-archname-compiler with the "-bin-" part being verbatim, i.e.e.g. MIME-Base64-2.05-bin-1-OS2.tar.gz MIME-Base64-2.05-bin-01-Win32-gcc.tar.gz MIME-Base64-2.05-bin-1-next-fat-gcc.tar.gz The archname part should be inspiered (or even identical) to $Config{archname}. The existence of binary packages also implicates that there's a need for specific README files for a port. Maybe we should give such README files names that mimic the name of the distribution file? This would allow that some READMEs get folded back into the source distribution (where such a thing seems appropriate) without a clash of filenames (except for 8.3 filesystems which we just cannot support very well, whatever we do). We could append everything after "-bin-" after a dot, e.g. README.02-archname-compiler OK, and if this is too bothersome for a maintainer because he doesn't want to write a new README for each distribution, we could also look for a README.archname-compiler It's just a suggestion. _This_ README file is just a test if PAUSE is programmed to support this suggestion or not. andreas koenig, 1998-02-17
